This was when I was a conservative constitutional litigator and occasional Republican Party activist, before my journalism career. Almost all of them showed Romney losing to Obama, and so conservative media started a movement to unskew the polls. There was even a website created, Unskewed Polls, that purported to fix the polling errors, and unskewed polls showed Romney winning. Conservatives believed that pollsters were deliberately undercounting Republican votes to discourage Republican voters and sway the results of the election. So to unskew the results, they reweighted the samples to include a higher percentage of likely Republican voters.

For Mormon Missionaries, Some ‘Big, Big Changes’

Andres Gonzalez, 19, stands on the balcony of his Los Angeles apartment, his hands in his suit pockets. It is his first week as a missionary, but today, instead of approaching people on the street, he is shooting a video that he will later post to social media. After about a dozen takes, he is successful. If you would like to learn more about Jesus Christ,” he says to the camera in Spanish, “contact me.”Mr. Gonzalez is the image of the modern missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has changed many of its practices — from how missionaries preach to how they dress. The faith, long known for sending tens of thousands of neatly and formally dressed young people across the globe each year to preach door to door, is encouraging new missionaries to spread the gospel on social media and, for some, with acts of community service closer to home.

The Isolationism Antidote - The New York Times

Why has the isolationist wing of Congress been blocking aid to Ukraine and become, in effect, a tool for President Vladimir Putin of Russia? Republican politics explain some of this folly, but I think another reason is pure cluelessness. Lack of familiarity with the world is, I think, one reason the United States periodically pursues self-destructive policies around the world. A second Trump presidency might entail even more consequential mistakes: pulling out of NATO, abandoning Ukraine, upending the post-World War II international system. Time spent abroad corrodes stereotypes (of the kind one hears these days about Israelis and Palestinians alike) and shores up our empathy by reminding us of our common humanity.

Mr. Romney, who describes his career in politics as a moral mission driven by his Mormon faith, has in recent years been marginalized in a party that has shifted to the right under the sway of Mr. Trump. Utah is a solidly Republican state, so Mr. Romney’s departure is highly unlikely to affect the balance of power on Capitol Hill. Mr. Romney was also cognizant that he would face a tough primary fight if he decided to run again. In the 2022 midterm elections, four House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Trump declined to run for re-election. In the book, Mr. Romney is said to quote his colleagues by name in discussing how Republican lawmakers really view and talk about Mr. Trump in private when the former president is not present.

Josh Gad still remembers the first time he and Andrew Rannells met, in June 2010 in a Los Angeles audition suite. Rannells was auditioning for “The Book of Mormon,” the new musical from the creators of “South Park.” Gad, then a correspondent on “The Daily Show,” had long been attached. Rannells, a replacement actor in “Hairspray” and “Jersey Boys,” was not remotely famous. American book-reading habits have been in decline for decades, but you wouldn’t know it from sitting in on a young-adult literature class held last winter at Brigham Young University. The professor, Chris Crowe, arrived to the classroom with a box full of books. When he announced they were free for the taking, some two dozen students rushed to the table. There were reminders that the class was taking place at “the Lord’s university,” as B.Y.U. And the discussion, which that day focused on “Make Lemonade,” Virginia Euwer Wolff’s verse novel about two teenagers living in poverty, came to a familiar head.
